ww1: African, Arab and Asian Merchant Seamen

October 27, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Classified as British subjects 250+ African Diaspora and Arab men were rounded up after their ships had been impounded in Hamburg at the outbreak of WW1 and subsequently interned at Ruhleben Camp, a racecourse outside Berlin. The event reveals the untold stories of these BAME merchant seamen, primarily from Sierra Leone and Yemen. Ultimately, the men’s collective stories represent triumph over tragedy and the overall narrative represents the rescue of a marginalised group of men otherwise lost to history. Also, learn about one man’s fascinating journey to Pakistan and back, in order to find his grandfather’s lost merchant seaman’s war medal.
